Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is a place for people, art, and ideas to create history. Through an extensive program of exhibitions, events, education, research, and publishing, the institution reflects on current developments in Russian and international culture, creating opportunities for public dialogue, as well as the production of new work and ideas in Moscow. At the center of all these activities is the Museum’s collection, which is the first archive in the country related to the development of Russian contemporary art from the 1950s through the present. Founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova and Roman Abramovich, Garage is the first philanthropic organization in Russia to create a comprehensive public mandate for contemporary art and culture. On June 12, 2015, Garage welcomed visitors to its first permanent home. Designed by Rem Koolhaas and his OMA studio, this groundbreaking preservation project transformed the famous Vremena Goda (Seasons of the Year) Soviet Modernist restaurant, built in 1968 in Gorky Park, into a contemporary museum.
Archive
Founded in 2012, Garage Archive Collection acts as a center for the study of Russian contemporary art in an international context. The collection is continually developing thanks to gifts and acquisitions, including materials from Moscow galleries, the personal archives of artists and collectors, and the findings of Museum staff.
The Art Projects Foundation archive forms the core of the collection run by Garage Research. It includes physical and digital archive materials from a number of Moscow galleries—XL Gallery, Aidan Gallery, Shkola Gallery, L Gallery, Paperworks, TV Gallery, and pop/off/art—and the archive of collector Leonid Talochkin, the chronicler of unofficial Soviet art of the postwar period. Several extensive photographic archives—from the artists Vlad Chizenkov, Igor Makarevich, Igor Palmin and George Kiesewalter—also form part of the collection, as do documents related to Garage exhibitions and education projects from 2008 onward. The video archive contains video documentation of Moscow’s contemporary art scene in the 1990s and 2000s. It includes the collections of Joseph Backstein, Vadim Zakharov, Igor Makarevich, Mikhail Nazarov, and numerous videos of Yulia Ovchinnikova as part of the Art Projects Foundation Collection.
